Welcome To SoCoDistrict.com
SoCoDistrict.com is the portal to all things SoCo: South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, 78704. Shopping, food, drinks, music, art, beauty--we cover it all, as well as lodging for the out-of-towner.
This area of Austin has seen many transformations over the last 100 years. Originally an unpaved, rural road in the early 1900s, it was lined with tourist courts and restaurants in the 1920s to '60s. In the '70s, it became an artists' mecca, then got a little shady in the following two decades before becoming the eclectic and hip area it is today, with red hot property values and outstanding retail shops and restaurants. The original character of the neighborhood has not been abandoned though, with much of theoriginal architecture still standing on the avenue and the same great view of the Capitol.
First Thursdays
One of the major attractions is First Thursday, an event held on (what else?) the first Thursday of every month, March through December. South Congress becomes one, huge block party, with many vendors setting up tables along the sidewalk, offering their wares, ranging from handmade jewelry to t-shirts and lots of other creative offerings. Additionally, businesses and eateries on South Congress stay open later until 10:00 pm to accommodate visitors.Join the fun, discover your new favorite restaurant, find some cool clothes, the perfect giftfor someone, or enjoy just people watching--it is a great way to get to know more about the district, and discover what many people already know about this original part of Austin!
